Every Little Helps

I recently did a 6 week placement with Goldie London working in their merchandising department. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never done any fashion work experience and to be completely honest whilst being there I had some moments where I thought, why am I here, this is really not me. BUT...after my full six weeks and a week to reflect on my time there, I realised that it taught me a lot, about the industry, about internships and about myself. I got to meet some great people, learn a number of new skills which I think will definitely help me in the future. If you are doing a Fashion Internship, or any internship actually then here is some advice.

  • No matter how small a job may seem, do it anyway...and with a smile on your face, because it will benefit you in some way. It may be the one thing standing in the way of you and much bigger more exciting jobs in the future.
  • Even if something isn't what you expect and you end up spending your time doing things that really aren't your style, just remember that you are still gaining skills that can be put on your CV and could be something that makes you stand out from the HUGE crowd of other students applying for future jobs.
  • Speak up! If you have a good idea or an opinion on something then don't shy away in the corner. I found that the people I worked with really appreciated when I spoke up and even took some of my ideas forward! It makes you feel great and can potentially get your voice and work out there.
  • If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask. Employers will appreciate it more if you ask and do something right then you guessing and doing it wrong meaning they have to fix it!
  • Be yourself. Remember to be yourself and not try to act like something your not. Even when it comes down to your daily outfits, I was in quite a casual environment on my placement, but I still made an effort with what I wore everyday! You never know who your going to meet so always be prepared to stand out! Your outfit could be what gets you remembered!
I hope these points can help other people looking to do internships. I learnt a lot from my placement and definitely want to try and get lots more in different areas throughout my studies!  I think they are really important as they give you a real insight into how the industry works in real life and give you a bit of a reality check, as it's not all glamorous in the Fashion World, its all about hard work!

Whilst working at Goldie I got to do a lot of exciting jobs, some of which came with quite a lot of responsibility.  One of my favourite weekly tasks was creating the Concession Staff Newsletter, where I got to be creative, which is a lot more of what I enjoy! I also got to write some of the style notes for the Goldie Boutique on ASOS Marketplace which was so exciting to see words I had written up on a largely used website! Here's a few of the bits and pieces I got to do below. :) xxx
